An Horse
Brisbane, Australia
Tegan and Sara, Death Cab for Cutie, The New Pornographers
If you can get past the grammatically reprehensible name you’ll find indie rock ditties so catchy they should be classified as weapon grade. The songs manage the difficult task of being mournful and heartfelt while remaining irrepressibly upbeat. Lush vocals and frenetic drumming propel the songs ever forward, staving off the monotony that is all too common in indie rock duos. It’s hard to stop listening to An Horse, each song leading to the next in a magnetic chain. Incredibly well constructed and containing almost no filler, An Horse’s albums are absolute joys to listen to.
With singer/guitarist Karen Cooper (previously of Iron On) and masterful drumming from Intercooler’s Damon Cox, this Brisbane based duo has quite the indie rock pedigree. Cooper and Cox met while working at a record store, and their mutual love for music lead to the two of them to form An Horse. They began practicing after hours and were soon regular fixtures in Australia. They released a full length album (Arranging Beds) and supported high profile tours for acts such as Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara and Silversun Pickups. With a highly lauded second album and a David Letterman performance, the last few years have done a lot to raise An Horse’s profile. Currently on tour, An Horse has been releasing a charming web series of their love for coffee that’s well worth checking out.
