Boy + Kite

The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Nada Surf
Boy + Kite is a band with laser accuracy. Their melodic, driving indie rock never misses a beat, never pulls a punch, and hits with a hook so hard, there's no choice but to let their music knock you to the floor. Don't worry though, Boy + Kite are good sports and will be the first to pull you back to your feet and dust you off before coming strong with another sure-fire hit.
Boy + Kite was formed by Darvin Jones and Beth Puorro in 2009. In the midst of the two friends sneaking into day spas at night and pondering life's questions while soaking in hot tubs, they discovered a strong musical connection and were soon coming to their regular rendezvous sessions with song ideas and lyrics written out. Jones, a perfectionist in the studio and experimental songwriter, put his technical savvy and unique perspective up against Puorro's passion for pop aesthetics. Working from opposite ends of the spectrum, they met perfectly somewhere in the middle with hook-heavy riffs and poppy melodies. Originally, Boy + Kite recorded their first three tracks as a duo in the studio in November 2009. Their first forays were so inspiring, both knew the project was destined to become a full fledged endeavor and the two joined forces with drummer Chris Mietus and bassist Giuseppe Ponti in the spring of 2010.
Boy + Kite doesn't necessarily work like most bands. Each member will work individually on lyrics or parts and then the band mashes things together without worrying about making the pieces fit. Luckily, each member also shares the same passion and focus, so while different ideas appear, similar themes run throughout the group's debut LP, Go Fly. A supremely satisfying summer record, the upbeat, accessibly alternative sounds call back to brighter times (like the early 90's for instance), while Jones and Puorro's dueling male/female vocals are just laidback and cool enough to be confused for an old Sonic Youth tape. All in all, Boy + Kite works in these nostalgic cues and straightforward pop sensibilities with enough dissonance and rough edges to appeal to multiple sides of any music lover's heart. And with such a soaring debut, it will be pleasure to see where Boy + Kite take off to next.
