If the collaborative album Watch The Throne from rap royalty Jay-Z and Kanye West exemplifies the epitome of mainstream hip-hop right now, Shabazz Palaces represents the opposite end of the spectrum where experimental beats, rhymes and life are still alive and well. The elusive Seattle collective (led by MC, Palaceer Lazaro, AKA Ishmael Butler, or Butterfly from the Grammy award winning jazzy hip-hop trio, Digable Planets) are proof that the rap map is wide enough to include groups like Shabazz Palaces whose eerie beat breaks and stream of consciousness rhyme patterns create a listening experience far from anything that’s currently playing on urban radio.

Portland electro-hip-hop outfit Breakfast Mountain doesn’t take itself too seriously, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t serious about pumping out tasty jams. Like a lot of sample- and programming-heavy groups, it offers up two distinct experiences—live versus studio—but each avenue ultimately serves up imaginative sound collages and bumping beats, ready-made for summer.

In case you aren't aware, "Diva" is the female version of a hustler, and Bounce-rapper Big Freedia is one Queen Diva. We've seen entire audiences - men, women and children - capitulating to her hard-hitting rhymes, provocative back-up dancers and stupefying trademark rump-shaking move.

The cover of Ghostpoet's 2011 full-length, Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam, features the image of singer-songwriter Obaro Ejimiwe blurred and set back behind a semi-opaque wall—appropriate imagery for an album that bears no flash or garish adornment in both sound and presentation. The first time I saw Merrill Garbus, aka tUnE-yArDs, was at a small venue in San Francisco about a year ago. I'd never heard the name before, and only attended on the earnest suggestion of a new friend. Yes, like everyone else now weighing in since her sophomore album w h o k i l l dropped April 19th, I can agree that her name's funny stylization turned me off. But not two seconds into the show you'd find me bent over picking chewed gum and loose hair from my jaw after it fallen off and rolled under the seat in front of me.

In a genre that has seen far too few powerful women, K.Flay is set on changing the game. Wielding a deft flow on the mic and showing increasingly impressive production skills, this one-woman wrecking crew has steadily made a name for herself in the rap community. On stage, she is a virtual potpourri of talent, constructing beats that perfectly complement the nearly-unrivaled innovation of her rhymes, as well as singing and playing guitar. Hip hop may still be a man's world, but with rising stars like K.Flay, it won't be for long.

DJ and producer Humble Dinosaur has been cutting his teeth in his local scene long enough. Possessing an edgy and innovative combination of Dubstep and Drum & Bass, it was only a matter of time before his self-released tracks made onto a mixtape or compilation and the world outside his hometown of Bridgeport would take notice.
