Das Racist
Tacoma, WA
Big Boi, Twin Shadow
These dudes have given away their music, have made a song about Taco Bell and Burger King and actually have something important to say. What more could you want from up indie hip hop act? Oh yeah, they made their own video game.
Blending bi-coastal stylings with social commentary and fun, Das Racist have been emerging in the music scene as ones to watch. The duo–made up of San Francisco born Victor Vazquez and Queens native Himanshu Suri– have gotten ahold of the internet and have grown from their infectious beats, unconventional style and handle on self-promotion.
Though their take on hip hop follows the traditional storytelling method, the lyrics are anything but. Their songs are mostly satire, poking fun at the Internet and American culture. Both Vazquez and Suri trade rhymes that play over looped beats and music. In the last year, they have released both their debut album and it’s follow-up, Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man, both to rave reviews. The duo, along with their hypeman Ashok Kondabolu have been gaining momentum and have begun a massive touring schedule, taking them as far as China and other parts of Asia.
The band seemingly knows only one direction in terms of their career and that’s forward. Keep your eyes out for these two and be sure to get your free downloads of the band’s tunes, while you still can.

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, is it not?
Music that is insightful, funny, and incredibly current all at the same time is hard to come by. Das Racist totally deserve all the positive attention they’re getting.
And yeah, it’s definitely Pizza Hut. Ha.
Love these guys!
Haha very funny and witty… And I’m definitely picking the taco bell
it’s combination pizza hut and taco bell…
I mean, seriously though, who wrote this?
Don’t think they’re from Tacoma.
Awesome flow during the verses, and I like the TV on the Radio influence on the chorus. And on top of that, their social commentary is spot on, biting, and intense.
Also, I highly appreciate their use of the book Shoplifting From American Apparel by Tao Lin in one of their songs. Not this one, but something else they’ve done.
