Exray’s
San Francisco, CA
My Bloody Valentine/ Velvet Underground/ Toro Y Moi
Most people have already heard Exray's brand of sultry electronic pop without even knowing it—with a song featured on the award winning film soundtrack for "The Social Network" last year. Penned by San Francisco residents Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp, Exray's harmonize organic and synthetic melodies creating a minimalist ambiance all their own.
After playing together under the name Ray's Vast Basement, Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp quit to reform as the electro-pop duo, Exray's. Structured as part lo-fi rock with Bernson on guitar and vocals, and part electro-pop thanks to Falsetto-Mapp on electronics, Exray's combine as a genre-bending force based within the foggy hills of San Francisco.
In October 2010, Exray's released their debut EP, Ammunition Teeth, on a run of 500 limited-edition cassette tapes. And while the inherent lo-fi nature of the release served their sound well, the duo upgraded the fidelity for their follow up, self-titled LP, released strictly on vinyl and as a digital download. While strictly a duo at heart, Exray's can count Nate Query (The Decemberists), Tim Cohen (The Fresh and Onlys), and Jason Kick (Maus Haus) among a long list of collaborators on both their debut EP and the recent LP.
The duo's most notable break came when their single "Hesitation" was used in the Golden Globe winning soundtrack for the 2010 film "The Social Network"—a track characteristic of their down tempo approach, featuring layers of reverb heavy chords, digital counter-melodies, and synthetic beats amid Bernson's calm and collected vocals.
Already back at work on their forthcoming EP set to be released this September, Exray's continue their communal approach on their latest project, offering an exclusive track for the San Francisco-based City Limits compilation whose limited edition vinyl will be available later this month.
