K.Flay
San Francisco, CA
Hip-Hop, Indie Pop, Indie Rock
Lady Sovereign, Missy Elliot, MNDR
In a genre that has seen far too few powerful women, K.Flay is set on changing the game. Wielding a deft flow on the mic and showing increasingly impressive production skills, this one-woman wrecking crew has steadily made a name for herself in the rap community. On stage, she is a virtual potpourri of talent, constructing beats that perfectly complement the nearly-unrivaled innovation of her rhymes, as well as singing and playing guitar. Hip hop may still be a man's world, but with rising stars like K.Flay, it won't be for long.
In the midst of getting dual degrees in psychology and sociology from Stanford University, K.Flay, whose real name is Kristine Flaherty, befriended a DJ and began experimenting with making beats. Her experimenting turned into artistry, and in late 2009 she self-released her first mixtape, the brilliant MASHed Potatoes. 2010 saw her star truly begin to shine, with the release of the Grizzly Bear-sampling "2 Weak" and a self-titled EP, not to mention tour dates with artists ranging from Snoop Dogg to Passion Pit.
Early 2011 finds her on tour in the U.S., with a couple of shows in the U.K. planned for May. Her next highly anticipated mixtape, I Stopped Caring in '96, is due out on April 1.
