Mister Loveless
Walnut Creek, CA
The Pixies, British Sea Power, Joy Division
Mister Loveless is the product of two different ideologies in rock: the isolating introspection of mood rock and the all-inclusive fist-pumping of contemporary alternative rock. Their music is reminiscent of two of the most influential bands in alternative music: Joy Division and The Pixies. What sets them apart from these two dark and heady bands is their ability to add gloss and pop to that inherent darkness. Their latest single, “Nineties Children,” could easily be played on commercial radio or on college radio; they straddle that line between alt rock and art rock perfectly. They’re like a coin that landed straight up on its side and won’t fall over. What makes this whole thing even more dramatic is that one side will eventually claim this band; they’ll either become an indie band or an alt-rock band - unless they become Radiohead (but that’s a different discussion). Whichever side they land on, you should marvel at the balancing act they’re doing right now – it’s impressive and mind-boggling.
Mister Loveless was formed in the Bay Area suburb of Walnut Creek, in 2003. The band consists of Rob Miller (vocals/guitar), Sean Gaffney (guitar), Charlie Koliha (bass), and Nick Clark (drums). Miller and Koliha formed the group, adding new members as their musical vision grew.
Since their formation, they’ve released an album, two EPs, a 7-inch, and are prepping to release their latest album, Grow Up. They’ve had an impressive live career, opening up for Black Francis, The Wedding Present and in October they’re opening up for Peter Bjorn and John at San Francisco’s Popscene. These guys have been hustling hard for the past 8 years and the buzz is growing to a point that seems to really be paying off. Luckily their music doesn’t exclude anybody, so there aren’t any limitations for these guys.
