Mr. Dream
Brooklyn, NY
The Jesus Lizard, Pixies, Nirvana
Mr. Dream is a post-punk trio out of Brooklyn who make well-crafted 90’s-era indie rock. Their music is designed to sound loose and raw (similar to grunge), but it’s actually very tight and thoughtfully constructed. One of the reasons behind this self-awareness is that two of the three members of Mr. Dream are also music critics; which means they are also music nerds. I can imagine they sculpted the band’s sound out of years of overanalyzing The Pixies, Nirvana, Guided By Voices and other critical darlings. And yet rather than confining themselves to write about this type of music, they decided to grab their guitars and drums and create it themselves. That’s admirable, and luckily for them it offers them a solid base to write some kick-ass songs.
Mr. Dream formed in Brooklyn in 2009 where the three members took to the fund-raising website Kickstarter to finance their debut EP, Mr. Dream Goes to Jail. Their local buzz grew fast and blogs started to take notice. Last year Stereogum named them one of their favorite bands of 2010, and The Fader praised their music in spite of the band’s music criticism background (apparently, moving from critic to musician is a tough sell). They self-released their debut LP earlier this year, Trash Hit, and they seem to gain more and more attention each month. At this pace you can expect them to be a big name indie act soon enough; I’d hurry and be the first to show your friends this one.

“For fans of Pixies, Nirvana”. Wow. No pressure…
