Oberhofer
Tacoma, WA
Dream Pop, Folk Rock, Noise Pop
Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, No Age
Rather than choke with reverb, Brad Oberhofer's fuzzy hooks come out crisp as they're thoughtfully woven through colorful distortion over lyrics flooded with enough honesty to make us forget that they were penned by a 19-year old from Tacoma, WA.
His deliciously haunting freak folk certainly doesn't sound like it was recorded by a one-man (err, boy) band in his parents' basement approximately a year ago, but the self-released 7” o0O0o0O0o was enough to put the interwebs under the Oberhofer spell. When that “studio” serendipitously burned down, it cemented Brooklyn as the one time NYU student's new home, now leader of a rambunctious four-piece determined to see this whole live band gig through to the end. After spreading their wings at CMJ last October, the bewitching bedroom pop act stretched their touring legs throughout the rest of the East Coast right before dropping a second 7” on Inflated Records, a further investigation of their own breed of lush, manic pop armed with fiendish riffs and celestial howls.
Maybe it's the audacity he cultivated competitively freestyling in the 5th grade, or the abandonment that comes with playing guitar naked in his room that spawned the raw, conscientious charm that permeates his songs and resonates with listeners. Like the pied piper of indie rock, Brad employs his soon-to-be-if-not-already trademark whistling and you're simultaneously drawn through memories of sunny-day-BBQs and first kisses, and the curiosity and heartbreak of teenage wasteland. But what guarantees that his name will prevail within the over-saturated independent music scene of Brooklyn is the accessiblily of his music: ears and eyes will flock to Oberhofer's sophisticated yet playful compositions and wily performances for a long time to come.

Love, love, LOVE this guy/band.
Is Awy Fm U one of his solo songs or did he record it with the full band?
Really love both tracks, especially the whistling!! But hopefully he’ll come up with a band name if he’s gonna continue developing a full backing band. The last name thing isn’t really doing it for me.
I am into this – will use it in my dance classes!
It’s nice to see someone using distortion to complement their music, rather than mask the lack of effort put into it.
I can get into this.
Wow, his voice sounds literally exactly like Avey Tare from Animal Collective. And some very Los Campesinos! use of glockenspeil.
Actually, it’s got some very interesting parallels to “You! Me! Dancing!” by Los Campesinos. Fun stuff.
I like this band, A LOT!
Man I wish I lived in NY so I could go to CMJ…
Just saw these guys open up for Tapes ‘n Tapes in Cleveland… they stole the show! I’ve heard the future, and it is Oberhofer!
