Sarah Lee and Johnny
Los Angeles, CA (By way of Raleigh, NC)
Neko Case, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris
If you like your country music smart and sensitive, the duo of Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion are exactly what you’re looking for. The delicate vocals and melodic harmonies echo the vulnerability that lurks under the surface of every song. Their music is bursting with genuine emotion, and it shows in every tune they play; from the lively Speed of Light to their more somber Cry Quieter, their show sparkles with authenticity.
The band has an impressive pedigree in their field; Sarah Lee is the daughter and granddaughter of Guthries Arlo and Woody (respectively) and she began her career as Arlo’s tour manager. An integral member of bands such as Freight Train, Dillon Fence and Queen Sarah Saturday, Johnny Irion has built a reputation as an incredibly talented and verisitle guitarist. Introduced to one another by The Black Crowe’s Chris Robinson, the two quickly overcame their mutual love of punk rock to form a country-rock team.
Married since 1999, the pair’s chemistry is as natural as it is electric and what started as the couple putting on a few shows as a lark blossomed into a a labor of love for the both of them. Initially teaming up with Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (grandson of Pete Seeger), the two have since made a name for themselves on their own.
When Sarah Lee and Johnny aren’t headlining shows, they participate in her father’s “Guthrie Family Concert Series.” Between their active touring schedule, a recently released full length album and a children’s album, there’s ample opportunity to hear them for yourself.
